Lapinha Cave
The Lapinha cave is a tourist attraction that is 48 km from the centre
of Belo Horizonte and has bus line that runs directly, Belo Horizonte to
Lapinha daily. It is located in the state park of the sumidouro. It comprises
of a block of limestone formed about 600 million years ago. It is 40m deep and
511m long. The composition is clay and hardened waste from the seabed that
accumulated in overlapping layers. Its interior features ornamentation formed
of crystallized calcite, and in its various forms gives names to the various
halls: Entrance Hall, Waterfall Room, Cauliflower Room, Cathedral Hall, Hall of
the Pyramids, Lamp Corner, Sheep Room and Crib Gallery. Furthermore the cave
has a large green area around it.
Rei da Mata Cave
The Rei do Mato Cave is 62 km from Belo Horizonte (MG), the BR-040, next
to the roundabout access to Sete Lagoas, has 998m extension of which 220m are
open to the public. The depth reaches 30 meters, and has four halls whose cave
paintings, dating back six thousand years show monochrome figures that are
predominantly of animal themes. Its stalagmite and stalactite formations, are
cylindrical with a diameter of approximately 12 feet tall, according to
geologists, are rare in the world.
Maquiné Cave
Maquiné Cave (MG-0243) (English: Maquiné Cave/Grotto), also Lapa
Nova de Maquiné, is the oldest and one of the most commercially visited caves
in Brazil. It is located about 5 km from Cordisburgo and 143 km northwest of
Belo Horizonte, in the State of Minas Gerais. The cave has seven huge chambers
explored, amounting to 650 linear meters and unevenness of the ground of only
18 meters. Safety measures like lighting, walkways and handrails allow a
multitude of visitors to enjoy safely the wonders of the grotto where the whole
journey is accompanied by an experienced local guide.
